The courses are designed to develop

Towards these objectives and to suit the contents of each course, a variety of teaching methodologies such as case studies, role-play, problem solving exercises, group discussion, computer simulation games, audio-visuals, are used in the programme.

The PM & IR / BM Programme consists of 41 three-credit courses (23 core courses and 18 elective courses) and a Summer Project.

Eligibility

For PM & IR and BM programmes, graduates who have completed three years of Bachelor's degree in any discipline as well as the postgraduates in any discipline are eligible to apply. Those completing their final examination by June 15, 2005 may also apply.

Academic Programme

The academic programme consists of six 10-12 week Terms, spread over two years for the PM & IR and BM programmes.

The First Year

During the first year of the Personnel Management & Industrial Relations Programme, students are given exposure to the courses directly related to PM & IR such as Labour Law, Industrial Relations, Organizational Behaviour and Human Resource Development, with a package of courses in basic subjects as well as other functional areas of management.

During the first year of the Business Management Programme, students learn basic concepts in the areas of Finance and Accounting, Marketing, Organizational Behaviour, Systems, Production and Quantitative Techniques. These courses help students appreciate the interdependency of the various functional areas and integrate them while addressing problems in the business context. These constitute the core courses. On completion of the core courses, students can pursue elective courses dealing with the functional areas of their interest.

Students are also given exposure to the socioeconomic environment, ethical and legal frameworks within which business operates in India.

Summer Project

At the end of the first year, all students of the PM & IR and the BM programmes are required to undertake a project assignment in an organization as an integral part of the curriculum. Students work on live assignments for various organizations which gives the students an opportunity to sharpen their knowledge and skills, develop better appreciation of the practical problems of business organizations in general and the management in particular. The Summer Projects help the students plan their professional career in the light of the practical experience gained during the eight to ten week period.

The Second Year

During the second year of the two-year programmes, the students take up optional (elective) courses in their respective areas of specialization. The list of elective courses is given under the section, Core And Elective Courses. However, designing and floating of any given elective course is dependent on the market demand, minimum number of registrations and other related factors. Emphases are laid on applied knowledge and case discussions. Students are encouraged to undertake research studies in their field of interest and specialization as term papers.

Executive PG Program

XLRI has been offering this three year programme since June 2000 for the working executives in India who have the potential to reach higher levels in the hierarchy of the management. The Exec-PGP programme provides executives with an opportunity to earn a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management without interrupting their career. The curriculum is similar to that of the BM programme and it exposes them to a wide range of management theories and practices. The first batch of Exec-PGP students graduated in the year 2003.

From October 2001, the Institute also began offering the Exec-PGP in Dubai in collaboration with the Al Abbas Institute of Technology.

The participants in India spend 18-20 days in Campus thrice a year to complete the course requirements. They are expected to do additional work as carry-home projects and assignments. The mix of participants, which includes entrepreneurs and executives from various functional areas, provides an enabling environment for learning. The Institute awards the Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management to participants who successfully complete all the requirements of this programme.

Eligibility

Candidates applying for the three year Executive Postgraduate programme must hold a minimum of three years Bachelor's Degree from a recognized University in India/abroad in any discipline; should be employed in a full-time job; must have at least two years of relevant managerial experience in an organisation of repute in the public, private or non-governmental sector after completing graduation and the necessary permission from the employer for pursuing this programme.

Academic Programme

The Exec-PGP is organized in 9 terms. Each term spans about three months. Participants' visit to campus may be termed as Campus Visit (CV). The sessions required for the courses are completed during the Campus Visits. Participants are expected to stay on campus for about 18 to 20 days in a term. This period is announced to the participants in advance so that they can arrange for their leave of absence from their respective organizations. During the period of their stay on campus, as the participants need to participate in intensive classroom sessions, they are required to be available full time. During this period there will be no holidays or any other break.

A tentative schedule of the courses is given in the table in the next page. The details of the schedule will be announced at the time when admission offers are made to the selected candidates.

Curricula

The curriculum for the Exec-PGP consists of 41 courses including 23 core (compulsory) and 18 elective courses of 3 credits each, totaling 123 credits. Term I courses are scheduled immediately after the orientation programme. The course outlines, study material and assignments are given to the participants before the term begins. Participants are expected to come prepared to class with the readings given before the class and the assignments to be done after the class. After the completion of a term, when the participants leave the campus, they are given course outlines, study materials, and assignments for the next term. While away from the campus, participants are expected to work at least 3 hours per day on the course work. Before the participants come to campus for the subsequent term, they ought to have gone through the study materials previously given to them. This cycle continues for all the nine terms. With such structuring of classes, participants get a proper spread for absorbing and assimilating various conceptual inputs provided in these courses.

Courses in Different Terms

During the first five terms the students learn the basic concepts in the areas of Finance and Accounting, Marketing, Organizational Behaviour, Systems, Production and Quantitative Techniques through 23 required courses in these core disciplines. These courses help students appreciate the interdependency of the various functional areas and integrate them while addressing problems in the business context.

Students are also given exposure to the socio-economic environment and ethical and legal framework within which business operates in India. These constitute the core courses. On completion of the core courses, students can pursue elective courses dealing with the functional areas of their interest.

In the remaining four terms the students take up optional (elective) courses in their respective areas of specialization. The list of elective courses is given under the section "CORE AND ELECTIVE COURSES". Besides the core courses, students are expected to take eighteen electives in their areas of interest. Students choose an appropriate mix of optional (elective) courses according to their preferences. Elective courses will be offered in Finance, Information Systems, Marketing, Operations Management, Human Resource Management and Strategic Management. The floating of any given elective course is dependent on the market demand, minimum number of registrations and other related factors. Emphases are laid on applied knowledge and case discussions. Students are encouraged to undertake research studies in their field of interest as term papers.

Dissertation

Dissertation is optional and is in lieu of an elective course. During the third year, only those students who have secured a minimum CQPI (Cumulative Quality Point Index) of 6.00 in the courses up to term V will be eligible to opt for a Dissertation on a topic of their choice. The Dissertation is intended to help students sharpen their analytical and conceptual skills and develop methodological rigors in dealing with practical problems.

Academic Evaluation System

Apart from examinations, a student's performance is assessed on the basis of class participation, preparation of periodic assignments, mid-term tests and surprise quizzes.
